Frequently Asked Questions

Murals

+ What kind of walls can you paint?

Most interior walls are able to be painted with a mural as long as they are clean and primed with paint. Exterior walls vary depending on condition and purpose. For example, a painted retaining wall will naturally age faster due to the earth's moisture on the other side of it. A wall with any kind of water damage (paint or plaster pockets, crumbling) will be rejected as the risk of damage is too high.

+ Do you have a minimum mural size?

Yes. 64 square feet which is about an 8x8 foot area. If you would like a smaller area painted by Samantha, consider commissioning a fine art piece on stretched canvas or wood panel that can be painted in the studio and delivered to your site.

+ Do windows/doors count as part of the square footage?

Windows and glass doors do not count. Doors only count if the image is being painted onto the door too.

+ How much do you charge for a mural?

Currently $20-$30 per square foot depending on the complexity of the design. For example a painting with blocks of color and a few simple subjects would be on the low end, whereas a portrait or an intricate landscape or tableau would be higher.

+ What is included in the price of a mural?

For local walls (Austin, TX & Philadelphia, PA): The base price of a mural - on top of 20+ years of creative expertise - includes a site visit and survey, a digital rough draft design, a max of 2 rounds of edits on the selected rough draft design, materials, and installation (design transfer + painting) on a cleaned, prepped, and primed wall.

+ What is not included that may need additional consideration?

Travel outside of Samantha's current location. Additional design edits (beyond the included 2) are $150/ round. A highly textured or brick wall incurs an extra fee of $5/square foot. Laying primer is $5/square foot. Unforseen wall conditions* or damage that add labor time is charged at $65/hour. Changes to the design or add-ons post design period are priced per request. Adding an additional protective clear top coat is $6/square foot.

*As Samantha isn't a handman, any structural repairs to the wall are the responsibility of the client prior to mural installation.

+ Why does it cost more to paint a textured exterior wall?

Due to the nature of brush painting, any texture or grooves in the wall adds a substantial amount of time to the project in order to get an even coat of paint and clean lines.

+ I’m on a budget, is there a way to bring the cost down?

Of course! Things you can do yourself to minimize cost are: priming the wall yourself before installation, painting a background color yourself, and being a flexible, open minded client during the design process to save on edits. Keeping the design simpler also keeps the cost down, painting a portion of the wall instead of the entire thing, or consider commissioning a fine art piece on stretched canvas or wood panel that can be painted in the studio and delivered to your site.

+ How much is the design deposit?

There is a $595.00 non-refundable deposit due before any steps are taken. This is added towards the project's final cost.

+ Why is my design deposit non-refundable?

Art takes time and time is money. Artists spend most of their lives growing their creative practice and that is very valuable.

+ How long does a mural take to paint?

There are multiple factors on Samantha's end, the clients and - for exterior jobs - mother nature's that effect timing. Prompt payments and responses to design emails move the process along quickly. Simpler designs on smooth walls will be executed faster than a large piece on a textured wall. If you are on a deadline, be sure to discuss this ASAP to see how it can be met. This will likely include a rush fee or hiring a painting assistant at an additional cost.

Fine Art Commissions

+ How much do you charge for a commission?

Pieces on paper are $8/square inch. Pieces on canvas or wood panel with standard dimensions are $10-14/square inch depending on complexity. Custom dimensions are priced per project.

+ Is there a deposit?

There is a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the estimated total due before any steps are taken. This is added towards the commission's final cost.

+ What is the minimum turnaround time for a commissioned piece?

Please expect at least 8-10 weeks from date of deposit.

+ Is there a way to get my piece faster?

There is a 30% fee of the commission's total to expedite the piece.

Miscellaneous

+ How much do you charge to live paint?

To have Samantha live-paint at your event costs $65/hour. If you would like to keep the piece Samantha is painting, cost is negotiable per her fine art commission terms above.

+ Do you do custom adornments?

Yes! As a former costume designer Samantha loves helping people look their best. At this time no formal price structure for custom adornments has been made. Feel free to inquire and we can navigate the project together.
